Conductor Lv Jia was appointed Music Director of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing at an exclusive ceremony on December 7th, 2016. The news was not released until January 1st, 2017 when Lv made his debut as NCPA Music Director.
Lv succeeded Chen Zuohuang, NCPA’s founding MD since 2007. Mr Chen used to be MD of both the China National Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. He left China in 2000 when almost three dozen CNSO musicians were snatched by Long Yu to his newly founded China Philharmonic Orchestra, leaving behind a crippled CNSO. He returned to China in 2006 and conducted two concerts of CNSO in September, shortly before he was appointed MD of NCPA the following year.
During Chen’s tenure he conducted a series of NCPA commissions and formed the NCPA Orchestra in 2010, serving as its chief conductor till 2012. He was succeeded by Lv.
Within the capacity of MD, Lv is expected to work closely with the other two artistic directors of NCPA: the Theatre Director and the Dance Director, to deliver performing arts at the highest possible quality, also making decisions on programme, commission and competitions. The three report directly to Chen Ping, President of NCPA.
Aside from the NCPA, Lv Jia serves as MD of the Macau Orchestra.
